Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science
Hypnosis is a powerful tool for controlling unwanted behaviour’s and making positive changes in one's life. When administered by a trained and qualified provider, it is considered a safe and complementary medical treatment. As research increasingly supports its efficacy, interest in hypnotherapy for addressing a range of medical issues is at an all-time high.
The origins of hypnosis can be traced back to ancient Egypt around 3000 BC, where it was used as a method of healing. Throughout history, hypnosis has undergone significant developments in science, religion, and medicine. In 1958, the American Medical Association (AMA) officially recognized hypnosis as a legitimate medical procedure for treating specific illnesses. Furthermore, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2003 that hypnosis was gaining traction in mainstream medicine and, by 2012, noted the growing scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness in various medical contexts.
A pivotal 2016 study by researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine confirmed the validity of hypnosis through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study demonstrated changes in brain activity associated with focused attention, body monitoring, and environmental awareness in hypnotized individuals. In India, the Government's Ministry of Women and Child Welfare officially accepted hypnotherapy as a valid treatment modality in 2003, provided it is conducted by a qualified practitioner.
Despite these advancements, hypnosis remains underutilized in the medical field. Dr. Pierre-Yves Rodondi of the University Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland remarked in 2016, "If hypnosis were a medication, it would already be in all hospitals. However, as an approach, it must overcome cultural barriers." As scientific validation and historical precedent continue to build, hypnosis stands poised to play a more significant role in medical treatment, bridging gaps in traditional care with its unique therapeutic benefits.
